Again, things just don't happen in the time frame you anticipate/want here in Peru. So we set off for the north on the Panamerican Highway. The area around Trujillo and Huanchaco is a fairly arid part of the country (as is most of the coast including Lima), but as we got out of town the terrain quickly became down right desert! There were still some shrubs here and there, but some sand dunes were also mixed in. It is a beautiful landscape in that stark and somewhat mysterious/dangerous way. You see the beauty, but know its so harsh and unforgiving at the same time. We were stopped several times on the way out of town by the local police for document checks. Obviously our paint job was attracting both positive and negative attention. But, we really didn't have any problems as we just stayed jovial and that seemed to put them at ease. It also helped that Omar is Peruvian. We made it up though Chiclayo and Lambayeque before we got too tired to keep going. However, the stretch between Lambayque and the next major city, Piura, is just about as barren as it gets.
