Water for elephants An elderly man, Jacob Jankowski (Hal Holbrook) waits for his son to visit him at his retirement home. When his son never shows up, he decides to look for him at the local circus. Whilst there he is found by two circus workers, who insist on returning him home. Jacob tells them that he was present for the greatest circus disaster of all time. One of the workers is intrigued, and decides to listen to his story. There is a flashback to 1931, where Jacob (Robert Pattinson) is a twenty three year old Cornell drop out. While taking his final exam, he finds out that his parents were killed in a car crash, with his father leaving a huge amount of debt behind him. The bank forecloses Jacob’s home, leaving him homeless. Feeling like there is nothing else for him, he finds the Benzini Brothers circus and stows away on the train. He sees a beautiful young woman, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), performing with the horses, and is instantly captivated. Having snuck his way onto the circus train, he is soon summoned to August (Christoph Waltz), the circus owner. August orders him thrown off, until he discovers that Jacob studied veterinary science at Cornell and has noticed a problem with Silver, the starring horse of the show. He agrees to hire him as a vet for the circus animals.
