福島第1原発の事故を受け、アメリカ国内の原発の安全性を再点検してきたNRC(原子力規制委員会)の特別調査チームが13日、電源が喪失した場合でも8時間は稼働を続けられるよう、予備電源の確保を求めるなど、12の提言を盛り込んだ報告書を発表した。報告書では、「福島事故のような一連の出来事は、アメリカでは起きず、原発は安全に稼働できるだろう」と指摘したうえで、原発の運転継続や新たな建設によって、「国民の健康や安全に差し迫った危険性を与えることはない」との見解を示した。そのうえで、地震や洪水に対する必要な備えを今後10年ごとに見直すほか、電源が失われた場合でも最低8時間は運転を続けられるよう、予備電源を確保し、炉心や使用済み燃料プールを72時間冷やすことができる体制を確保するよう求めた。さらに、福島原発と同じ型の原子炉には信頼できるベント装置を設けるよう求めるなど、12の提言を行っている。
