Her husband, Bai, drove us around in the family car. "Please don’t tell my tour company!" she urged. They drove us by Tienanmen Square where we could see Mao's massive portrait hanging above Tienanmen Gate. Further south in the massive square was Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall, where the allegedly orangeish remains of the frozen despot are raised daily from an underground freezer and displayed to an unending line of onlookers in a crystal coffin. Since we were short on time and the line was very long, I was unable to satisfy my morbid curiosity and had to save my visit for another trip. I faced similar bad timing in Hanoi and had to pass by Uncle Ho's remains as well, making me 0-for-2 on frozen communists. We took the newly-built bullet train from the Beijing South Station, which resembles Space Mountain, to Tianjin 75 miles away. The train covers the journey in only 30 minutes and peaks at 210 miles per hour. Emerging from the station, I found Tianjin to be quite pleasant and charming. The city is located on the Hai He River, crossed by small historic bridges and lined by a promenade.
