It may have been considerably slower than the night buses but the increase in comfort more than justified it. Essentially each pair of facing seats turned into a bunk bed. This meant that each seat was the width of a bed meaning that we had oodles of space. Just to prove how expensive the trains are back home, the 6 minute journey from my house into town costs around 5 pounds whereas we've just paid about 10 pounds each for a 13 hour trip on a train, each with our own bed! On the train we decided to put Chaing Mai on hold for a few days and get the bus straight to a little town called Pai. The bus trip is notoriously rickety and we were somewhat apprehensive when we saw that our rucksacks were gonna be on a roof rack going around the very steep and windy roads into the hills but they made it one piece. Total travelling time from Bangkok to Pai was 21 hours - a new record for land travel!! Understandably a bit knackered we just spent the rest of the day chilling and planning the next few day's activities. After a much needed lay in we took a ride in the back of a pick up truck to go elephant trekking. The first trek was an hour and a half through the jungle.
