Destructing TMA- From "Form" to fighting

often times, the movements from a Taolu or "Kata" do not have to be altered to be used for a fighting application. However, almost all of the time, it must be made smaller, faster, and more compact. A second in a fight, is like an hour in everyday life. The "time gap" is extremely small in a real fight, so movements cannot be grossly exaggerated, unless the opponent is within range, and your timing is correct. But, most of the time, techniques are fast, small, and numerous. My favorite styles are XingYi, wing chun, Kali, and boxing, which all advocate simplicity and straight forwardness. Whether you study Karate or any other style, it can be made practical, you just have to look at your art from a street fighting perspective, make the movements smaller and more direct. Lastly, you cannot plan techniques, you can only respond in a fight. That is why it is paramount to train many hours to develop muscle memory Oh yeah.......and just because you have fought in Point fighting, chi-sao tournaments, NAGA grappling tournaments, or any Amateur Boxing matches does not mean you are a good fighter. It means that you are good at that sport. You must train your mind, and visualize what it truly takes to survive a street fight. Do you have it in you to stomp a man’s head.
