A’Fair Sidewalk Art

After 36 years... The annual Capitol A’fair event features a new display... on the sidewalk. Megan Lowry takes a look at art from a 3-D perspective. Megan? Most kids have played hopscotch... or drawn pictures with chalk on our walkways... But one man may have pedestrians wanting to jump "into" his art. 36:16:18 "It's a great thing to make a mess on somebody else's sidewalk and not have to clean it up." It starts out as a simple sketch... Then by adding color and shading the piece, it comes to life. " With 3d art you use mathematics and fun stuff to make the image appear to pop out of ground." Shawn Mccann has been creating street art for over 7 years. He says it started as a way to get out of the studio and soon became much more. 23:33:24 "It's a lot more challenging and physically it's a lot harder that sitting in a chair or standing in a studio working at an easel." Using chalk and a lot of imagination Mccann can create a lifelike image. 23:35:44 It's everything from the sketch to the way you use the color and it all comes to play giving it the 3d perspective. The illusion is created by a vantage point so subtle the naked eye can barely see it. "You have single vantage point from the camera and so you want to make sure all your angles are correct because if you don't have those correct then it's not going to have that 3D affect." Mccann says the beauty of the art is that it's temporary. This piece will take 2 days to complete, but soon fades away. "It's creating those images that people will remember I've run into a lot of people who remember back three or four years ago who saw myself or somebody else working on a piece I think because it's such a short-lived process people remember that." Leaving a lasting image for those walking by. "To see their reaction when they see the final piece and the kids say I want to go home and create one in my own driveway that's really why I do it."
