Joe Helt Disappearance Story On YNN Cable 6 News (3)

Twenty-four years later, friends and family are still searching for answers in an Ulster County missing man case. Joe Helt was just 17-years-old when he disappeared. On January 16, 1987, Joseph David Helt, a 17 year old Ellenville High School student, disappeared without a trace. Joe was partying with friends that night in Mount Cathalia. He then took a ride with 3 acquaintances, Kelly Diaz, John LaForge and Wade Marks. According to newspaper accounts, these acquaintances stated several things: 1) that the car got stuck in a ditch and they could not get it out. 2) that Joe then left to walk the 5 miles back down the mountain into Ellenville for help. 3) that Kelly Diaz and Wade Marks left a while later to also go for help and John LaForge walked home. Joe did not show up for work the next day and the search began. Unfortunately a very intense snow storm came through the area which hampered the search. Since then there have not been any breaks in the case and no answers have been found. Ellenville Central School students felt the shock, horror and disbelief of Joe’s disappearance back in 1987 and we still do to this day.
