Kenyan Freedom

As Kenyans celebrated the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, they faced trouble brought on by the Kenyan insurgency group known as the Mau Mau. The Mau Mau were rebels against British rule in Kenya.

Elected in 1964, Jomo Kenyatta denounced the Mau Mau and emphasized that freedom can be achieved through non-violent means. Kenyatta was accused of being an alleged Mau Mau leader and was arrested.

Tensions grew between the Mau Mau and the British settlers as violence grew to a boiling point. Despite many claims that a thousand settlers had been killed, it was later revealed that only 32 Europeans were killed, whereas over a 2,000 Africans had died in the violence. Many settlers ended up leaving due to the violence. In 1963, two years after being released from prison, Kenyatta led Kenya to freedom. He would later be nicknamed the "Father of Kenya". He died in 1978.
