"Hi all, well today we left old Panama City and Central America behind and caught a cheapie flight (www.aires.aero all in Español) to Cartagena in Colombia. Was a bit anxious all morning as we only had one way flights, and could easily have been turned back, but instead it was all very easy. The plane was a wee Dash 80, propeller job - I had´t been on anything as small since I once flew from the ´massive´ Dundee airport down to London City. So, we basically didn´t climb so high that I couldn´t see the ground all the time - only just over an hour later we landed, and are now checked into a nice hostal (Casa Viena) in the old colonial part of the city (Getsemani). Did a quick walk round the old town, which is lovely, and have already tried out the local brew - Aguila, and it´s okay. Next, a hunt for cheap food. Cartagena is an old colonial city (it has a sprawling modern part too, taking the population to about a million!), which is surrounded by a high, thick wall built by the Spanish to repel marauders like Sir Francis Drake. It wasn´t always successful because the city has been sieged 5 times. It was founded by the Spanish in the 1500s, and the old quarter´s mostly 16th and 17th century buildings are gorgeous.
