The tour company turned us loose to shop, dropping vast amounts of foreign currency into the Chinese economy. We chose to go on a rickshaw ride in the morning, and that ride covered a lot of ground. I enjoyed the scenery, the market, and even the home we visited, but I did wonder about a kindergarten that invites tour groups to watch the little children. As our time in China wound down, we began thinking of home, looking forward to our own home and bed. But I couldn't shake China from my mind. The people, the system, the beauties of nature, culture and man-made wonders all whirl around in my mind as I try to come to some conclusions about the place. ............................................................ ....... I am writing this 7 months after returning home, and during that 7 months I have thought a lot about my reaction to China. I often find myself brooding over my reaction to the country, trying to identify what I feel. I try to test out my thoughts on people, but I am not sure what I say is really it. I suffer from abivalence. I liked the people. The masses/individuals struggling to keep going amidst ferocious competition for resources. The people who climb down a mountain to paddle some tourists around, take their share of a few measly tips then ...
