Interview with Diarmuid Wrenne, CEO of Lukulu

Diarmuid Wrenne founded Lukulu to develop a Bluetooth publishing platform for mobile devices. With the capability to record text, pictures, sound and video, our mobile phones have the potential to be gateways for personal publishing. In practice, however, the cost and relative difficulty of MMS messaging and data services provided by the mobile networks appears to be an obstacle to this. Lukulu will deploy Bluetooth access points in public venues such as entertainment venues, colleges, and shopping centres and at events such as sports fixtures and music festivals. Individual users will also be able to download and install the Lukulu Point-of-Presence on Bluetooth-enabled computers. Users can quickly and easily generate media on their mobile devices and transfer it to the Bluetooth access point. A receipt message will be returned with details of how to activate and publish their content, and it will include an advertising message. The advertisement may be for the venue or for some other product or service and it will, of course, be “location aware”. Ireland has 110% penetration of mobile phones, and more than 70% of those devices have Bluetooth. Lukulu will handle any type of media in a variety of formats from different kinds of devices, and the user can choose to have it published from the Lukulu site to their social network of choice such as Myspace, Bebo or Facebook. Lukulu are supported by the Genesis Programme, jointly run by Enterprise Ireland and Cork Institute of Technology. In addition they’ve received funding under the Enterprise Ireland’s CORD programme. They plan to join the Paddy’s Valley tour of Irish entrepreneurs to Silicon Valley on December 2nd.
