20年以上にわたって内戦が続いたアフリカ・スーダンで9日、南部が独立しました。アフリカで54番目の国家となる「南スーダン共和国」が誕生しました。市民が喜びに沸く一方で、国内には数々の課題も残されています。南スーダンが抱える深刻な教育事情を取材しました。アフリカ54番目の国として誕生した「南スーダン共和国」。大人たちに混じり、多くの子どもたちも真夜中の町で独立を喜んだ。しかし、この国の子どもたちを取り巻く環境は、極めて深刻な状況となっている。ジュバ市では、独立までの間、すべての学校は休校となっているが、空き教室を利用して補習授業が行われていた。休みにもかかわらず、自主的に登校した生徒たち。電気もない教室だが、生徒は授業に熱心に耳を傾けていた。南スーダンの教師は「内戦で教育は崩壊した。教科書もない。教師はみな年老いていて、数も減少している」と話した。補習に参加した生徒は「将来は、産婦人科医になって人の役に立ちたい。高校の授業だけでは足りないから、補習に参加した」と話した。厳しい環境の中、新しい国のために勉学に励む若者たちだが、実際に学校に通える子どもたちはわずか。一方、豊富な資源に目をつけた中国が、影響力を増している。中国の出資によって建てられたばかりの学校には、入り口には「CHINA AID」の文字が刻まれていた。建物はプレハブ建築だが、机やいすはとてもきれいだった。しかし、中国の本当の狙いは「教育支援」以外にもあるという。中国出資の学校副理事長は「中国は学校建設を足がかりに、南スーダン市場での中国製品の売り込みを有利に進めたいのだろう」と話した。南スーダンでは、学校以外にも中国出資のホテルが立ち並ぶなど、存在感を示している。内戦の混乱から、新しい国として生まれ変わる南スーダン。大国の思惑に左右されず、自力で若い世代を育てる日はいつになるのか、課題が突きつけられている。
