PA: CITY TO DEMOLISH FMR PENGUINS HOME

Shot 11/23/2010.## After hearing many comments from both sides, the city Planning Commission voted Tuesday to move ahead with demolition of the Civic Arena, the former home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Sports and Exhibition Authority had already voted unanimously in September to tear down the old arena, but the planning commission’s approval was also required for any demolitions and redevelopment within Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle. "We've talked with developers as we've started to look at the development of this land, and all the developers have told us, if you're going to seriously be able to develop this land, this parcel of land where the arena sits today, the Civic Arena has to go," said Travis Williams, the Penguins' senior vice president of business affairs. Some preservationists had fought to save the silver-domed staple along Centre Avenue and find another use for the old arena, which has hosted hundreds of concerts, basketball games and special events over the past 50 years. State Sen. Jim Ferlo and City Councilman Bill Peduto were among those who spoke against the demolition at Tuesday's meeting, along with Pittsburghers who brought signs to show their support for the Igloo. The Penguins have moved across the street to the new Consol Energy Center, and they hold rights to develop the land on which the Civic Arena sits, which was a part of their agreement to stay in Pittsburgh.##
