Why The Destruction of the Temple Was Worse Than The Holocaust

Why I believe that the destruction of the Second Temple was worse for the Jewish people than even the Holocaust. Some additional comments: Israel from its inception has put inordinate weight on the Holocaust, mainly to distinguish the New Jew of Zion from the Old Jew of Europe. While the Old Jew was led off to slaughter, the New Jew declares 'never again,' as if this was a choice at his discretion. Holocaust Day is formally Yom Hazikaron Lashoah v’Lag'vura, the date of which is based on the start of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Rather than connect the Holocaust to Tisha B'av along with virtually every other tragedy that befell the Jewish people since the second Temple's destruction, Israel wanted to emphasize the resistance to the Holocaust and distinguish that from the rest of Jewish history. American Jews who have otherwise become estranged to Judaism and no longer even associate with Reform Judaism (which itself has pushed for more traditional Jewish life in recent years) have embraced the Holocaust as the symbol of their very Jewishness. Thus, the Zionist emphasis on recent history, albeit with a tip of the hat to some vague biblical connection, and the American Jewish community's increased reliance on the Holocaust for identity all contribute to the notion so horribly embraced by haters of Israel in the middle east and elsewhere, that we have no significant historical roots here in Israel.
