Forum: Law and Accountability in the Age of WikiLeaks

For several years WikiLeaks was an award-winning site exposing corruption around the world. In 2010, it began revealing sensitive US acts and communications culminating in the release of 250000 State Department cables to major news organizations. These actions caused a great deal of anxiety worldwide. Nine NYU faculty and alumni --experts in the First Amendment, national security, Internet law, and journalism --will discuss what worries them most about WikiLeaks and the responses to it. Our discussion will be an examination of past cases including the Pentagon Papers, to enrich our understanding of the present and future of law in the Internet age. Questions for discussion: Will international diplomacy be hampered by the threat of disclosure? Is WikiLeaks and its ilk journalism? What can the private sector do to protect itself from WikiLeaks? And how should the law regard private sector efforts to hobble WikiLeaks?
