英会話講師のリンゼイ・アン・ホーカーさん(当時22)殺害事件の裁判員裁判で、リンゼイさんの父親・ウィリアムさんの証人尋問が行われた。殺害されたリンゼイさんの父親・ウィリアムさんは「この国で許される最高刑を望みます。一切の反省もなく、一切の慈悲もなく、わたしの娘は殺された。寛容は許さない」と怒り交じりに証言した。証言台に立つ直前、市橋達也被告(32)の前に仁王立ちになり、数秒間にらみつけるなど、法廷に緊張が走った。検察側の被告人質問が行われた8日の裁判。市橋被告が、リンゼイさんを部屋に招き入れたあとの状況について、検察官は繰り返し質問した。検察官が「ハグして拒絶されたからといって、なぜ乱暴を?」と質問すると、市橋被告は「リンゼイさんとハグをさせてもらえたら、キスもしたいし、性行為もしたかった」と話した。さらに検察官が、「いつの時点から?」と質問すると、市橋被告は「リンゼイさんが、わたしの部屋に入ってくれた時です」と答えた。リンゼイさん殺害後、バスタブに入れた遺体に土をかけて埋めた市橋被告。検察官が「土に埋めたのは、警察に捕まりたくなかったからか?」と質問すると、市橋被告は「土をかけたのは覚えています。なんでやっているのかわかっていません。すみません」とすすり泣きながら答えた。一方、焦点の殺意の有無については、検察側の主張との食い違いを鮮明にした。市橋被告は「リンゼイさんが動かなくなる直前の表現は納得できません。大声を上げないよう上から覆(お)いかぶさったが、検察官は『それは首を絞めたということだ』と。あの日は、最後の取り調べの日でした」と話した。検察官が「あなたは殺人と強姦(ごうかん)致死で逮捕されて、首をどう圧迫したかが一番重要だと思わない?」と質問すると、市橋被告は「弁護士の先生が、裁判で話せばいいと。自分の謝罪の気持ちと事件の概要だけは、リンゼイさんのご家族に伝えてほしかった。だからその時は、そのことは考えていなかった」などと話した。そして、午後5時前から始まったリンゼイさんの父親の証人尋問。市橋被告をにらみつけてから証言台に立ったウィリアムさんは、「なぜ娘を日本に行かせたのか。自分たちを責めたこともあった」と涙ながらに証言した。その後、怒りを交え「反省している様子は見られない。わたしたち家族に、平凡な幸せは戻ってこないけれど、この邪悪な男が行った邪悪な行為を、最高刑を...
