Auxiliary CCTV lighting — Over exposed IR LED illuminators

This is a video in Axis Communications' Academy Fundamentals educational series. In this video, we have locked the camera in night mode and enhanced the available building lights and ambient moonlight with an AXIS T90A32 IR-LED 850 nm semi-covert illuminator. The LED lamp has an area of coverage from 30 to 60 degrees with a reach of 80 to 53 meters (262 to 173 feet) As you can see in this video, the illuminator has been set to a narrow angle of view to provide the long distance coverage. As the snow reflects the building lights as well as the moon light, the effect is a bit difficult to see. What you will see however, if you compare to this video: www.youtube.com is that as the person approaches the camera, identification is left virtually impossible as the light source is too powerful and all identifying features becomes washed out. Identification is made possible as the person exits the light beam in the very last second of appearance. Placing the IR illuminator higher than the camera, further away from the person, and expanding the IR-illuminator’s angle of view/changing to a less powerful illuminator would reduce the problem. The video shows the importance of testing in realistic scenarios, as the first part of the video without anyone in the scene looks perfect.
