New York Travel: The US Open 2010

On September 1, day 2 of the 2010 US Open, we got to see all sorts of elite players, from Elena Dementieva, Radek Stepanek, Patty Schnyder, Fernando Verdasco, Rainer Schüttler, Marcos Bagdhatis and Robby Ginepri to headliner Maria Sharapova we got to see many of the tennis world’s greats. We even peeked at Rafael Nadal and Martina Navratilova on the practice courts. We also got a peek at tennis commentators Mary Carillo, Brad Gilbert and Mary Jo Fernandez who were getting their noses powdered for their TV appearances. Exhausted, parched from the hot sun yet excited about the tennis, we stayed until after 9 pm and had a simple dinner near our B&B in Brooklyn. Before heading to the USTA Tennis Center we went into Manhattan in the morning to do some brief shopping and checked out the area around 34th and 9th Street near Madison Square Gardens and the imposing neoclassical James A. Farley Post Office. We also stopped off at the Apple Store at 14th & 9th, a temple of modern design in an old Victorian-era building. Just a 30 minute walk in Manhattan will give you so many unique vistas of this one-of-a-kind city... We arrived back at the US Open around noon and enjoyed a whole afternoon and early evening full of high-class tennis. We got to see an outstanding match between Michael Berdych and Michael Llodra in the Grandstand and watched stars like Elena Dementieva and Marion Bartoli on the side courts, from just meters away.
