Cannon County Spelling Bee

The audience waited expectantly and collectively held their breath while each student thoughtfully formed the spelling in their mind and spoke their answer into the microphone. Some first wrote the word first on a clipboard before they gave their final answer. If their word was correct, they made their way back to the center of the "stage," and waited for the next word. If not, they were asked to sit on the front row in the audience. Even though the sleet was falling outside Monday night, a good crowd gathered in the bleachers for the spelling bee finals. Teachers, families, and friends were there to encourage their favorites. Several participated and in the end, one was left standing, Jake Hoskins. Kate Hoskins was runner up. Barbara Parker, Director of Schools, gave trophies to the top speller and the runner up, certificates were given to the other participants for their hard work. It was revealed by Gay Burger, that the top two spellers not only were from East Side, but they were brother and sister, Kate and Jake Hoskins. The state competition will be in March. Here are the local school winners: East Side- 1st Jake Hoskins, 2nd Shelbie Campbell, 3rd Kayleena Deer, 4th Graden Strang, 5th Katie Hoskins Woodbury Grammar- 1st Allison Smith, 2nd Tyler Gilley, 3rd Colby Hunt, 4th Cole Barnes, 5th Robert Norrod West Side- 1st Katie Hickman, 2nd Breanna Hatcher, 3rd Elleana Sissom, 4th Cassie Pelham, 5th Kyle Margarito Short Mountain- 1st Ashlyn Ellis, 2nd Carla Kurth, 3rd Whitney Murphy, 4th Tori Tate, 5th Molly Williams Auburn- 1st Brandon Harper, 2nd Paige Tenpenny, 3rd Marshall McReynolds, 4th Reagen Scott, 5th Hunter Sandlin No one from Woodland, as they did not participate.
