Mayor of Astoria declares June 7th 'Goonies Day'

Astoria’s mayor Willis L. Van Duzen made his arrival at a VIP dinner event on Friday evening dressed appropriately in a black tuxedo and making sure that he had the attention of the room before introducing the celebrities in attendance. The mayor took the opportunity to make a special announcement in conjunction with the city's 25th Anniversary celebration of the release of The Goonies. The mayor began his announcement as the room fell silent. He made the following statement: "Whereas our beloved and world famous movie The Goonies was directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg and filmed in Astoria in 1985... Whereas The Goonies has been entertaining millions worldwide for 25 years... And whereas The Goonies has involved over 2200 volunteers, movie extras, and staff from the Astoria area... And whereas The Goonies, through tourism has helped Oregon businesses generate millions of dollars... And whereas The Goonies, through its story and style, is firmly a part of Astoria and its 200 year history and an exciting part of our culture... And whereas The Goonies has provided happiness for millions worldwide by allowing us to use our imaginations to have fun... So therefore I, Willis L. Van Duzen, Mayor of Astoria, do hereby proclaim The Goonies as an official treasure of the city of Astoria; and declare "Goonies Day" from now on, every June 7th from this day forth". The mayor again made this announcement to a theater full of fans later in the evening.
