Unofficial exit polls suggest that it will be Nicolas Sarkozy and Segolene Royal who go through to the final round of Presidential elections. As voting continues the favourites have emerged as the frontrunners after an 85% turnout.

A campaign to elect France's first female president goes to the vote today. The favourite for the nomination, Segolene Royal, will be selected automatically if she wins an overall majority among party members.

Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy has won the French elections - according to an official exit poll. In his victory speech, he promised unity and inclusion and said he would be the President of "all" French people. Rival Segolene Royal has conceded defeat.
