The Douglas County Community Foundation is launching an initiative to make events and programs available to encourage residents to stay healthy and active. Douglas County has one of the lowest obesity rates in Kansas, but hopes to lower the rate even further.

Student Health Services held its second wellness fair this spring in front of Anschutz Library. This year, health service representatives decided to sponsor four wellness fairs instead of the usual one in order to reach more students.

Lawrence residents can now skip the waiting room at their family doctor and head to the pharmacy to get diagnosed. Walgreens at Sixth and Kasold now provides medical diagnoses along with the filling of prescriptions.

The meter on the bottom of The Community Blood Center's says it all: the need for blood is critical. According to the organization, they need about 580 donors a day to keep up with the needs of the medical community. The reasons to need blood are plentiful, but the supply is low.

Today students were able to enjoy free water and massages at Watkins Health Center. Channels of Healing and the Pinnacle Center Institute provided the 15 minute massages. Stress-relieving breathing exercises were also demonstrated at the event.

Running is providing more than health benefits in Lawrence this fall, it's also helping out a new local business. Gary Gribble's Running Sports opened its first store in Lawrence this summer. The store sells a variety of products for runners including shoes and healthy snacks.

Students can participate an optional test next Monday, but they won't need to be studying to prepare for it. Students can come to the Kansas Union on Monday to receive one of 1,000 free HIV tests.
